Policy: Sustainability

esaa promotes responsible economic, environmental and social management through effective corporate governance within a sustainable energy business and regulatory framework. In addition to complying with all statutory requirements, the energy supply industry has for many years been pursuing best practice in environmental and sustainability management.

esaa Sustainable Practice Framework

The Sustainable Practice Framework builds on the former esaa Code of Sustainable Practice. It recognises existing minimum standards of performance and sets 'stretch goals' to help businesses implement sustainability across their business over time.

The Framework has been developed to encourage best practice sustainability programs, improve voluntary sustainability reporting and share good environmental, community, governance and workplace practice within the energy supply industry. Signatories are encouraged to publicly report their sustainability performance.

The Sustainable Practice Framework comprises a set of nine sustainability principles, two reporting options and an awards structure covering both sustainability reporting and innovation in sustainability such as demand management, supply chain and climate change response.

The Framework takes into account the Global Reporting Initiative G3 Guidelines and its related Electric Utilities sector information. The energy indicators developed for the Framework have been referenced by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in a supplement to its Broad-based Business Reporting Framework.

Sustainability Reporting Award and Industry Innovation Award

esaa presents an annual award for the best industry Sustainability Reporting Award for members who produce a public sustainability or integrated annual report. The awards commenced in 2005, replacing the former Environment Report Award. With the introduction of the Sustainable Practice Framework from March 2009, esaa will continue to provide the Sustainability Reporting Award but will also present up to two Industry Innovation Awards.

Entries for the Sustainability Reporting Award will be called for via a letter to esaa members in November each year and will be judged by an independent panel. The awards will be presented at the first esaa CEO Forum the following year, usually in March.

esaa will also present up to two awards for industry innovation in an area covered by one of the principles of the Sustainable Practice Framework. Signatories to the Framework can enter the Industry Innovation Awards by completing Part B of the Framework questionnaire.
